THINK BETTER - PAINT BETTER!
The NUTS & BOLTS of INTUITIVE THINKING and ART!
Our Intuitive center or place of "Better Knowledge" is, in a word, WORDLESS. It is so quiet and such a rock of stability that it never responds in any way to pressure, emotions, or argument. It simply IS... The KEY here is that our INNER SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE OF TRUTH AND REALITY IS WORDLESS - non-verbal! That is how we can recognize it.
Intuitive knowledge comes in the form of fleeting images or complete concepts or wordless understanding (the "Ahhhh" factor - the "light" goes on).
By becoming AWARE of the constant internal discussions (arguments, really) between our two Selves, one usually in the forefront: NOISY, DOUBTFUL, JUDGMENTAL, WORD-FILLED and EMOTIONAL, and the other in the background, just beneath the commotion: WORDLESS, QUIET, PEACEFUL and PLACID, we can OBSERVE OUR THOUGHT PROCESSES that LEAD TO THE DECISIONS we end up making with respect to our Art.
The truth is that our quiet wordless Self hovering in the background, just below our level of consciousness, is always Right! ALWAYS!
The KEY lies in OBJECTIVE OBSERVATION of our THOUGHTS - which brings AWARENESS. AWARENESS is accomplished by HONEST observation of our thoughts. Honest observation is objective observation.
And no matter how loud or long or how persuasively (it may seem so to our word-filled Intellectual Left Brain) we argue against our "Better Knowledge", our quiet, wordless Intuitive Self is ALWAYS correct. Think about this! When you are arguing with yourself, who are you trying so hard to persuade? It is your real, Intuitive Self. Your free spirit! Your control-freak INTELLECT is trying to IMPRISON THAT FREE SPIRIT of yours! It is as simple and as true, and as awful as that!
Difficult to believe, perhaps, but true nonetheless, as you will discover when you observe the phenomenon in your own mind.
And think about this: Provided your skills are equal to the challenge (acquired through lots of practice coupled with good thinking), CORRECT THINKING, BASED ON TRUTHFULNESS ALL THROUGH YOUR PAINTING PROCESS, WILL LEAD TO THE CREATION OF TRUE ART.
So, it is wise to seek out this kind of awareness, is it not? Take time to observe your thoughts and you will learn that: LEFT BRAIN thinking is Intellectual, very VERBAL and ACTIVE in nature. RIGHT BRAIN "thinking" is Intuitive, WORDLESS and PASSIVE in nature. Read this again! Then think this through! Contemplate on this.
In other words, Intellectual Thinking (analyzing, drawing consclusions, justifying, doubting, worrying, etc. is a verbal mental ACTIVITY, whereas Intuitive "Thinking" (just knowing) is non-verbal and PASSIVE. Intellectual Thinking takes EFFORT/ENERGY as we TRY TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN (friction and stress), whereas Intuitive "Thinking" comes to us FREELY WITHOUT ANY EFFORT/ENERGY on our part (no friction, no stress).
Therein lies the difference - the KEY DIFFERENCE between the two kinds of thinking. Observe you thoughts, and see for yourself.
Pay attention now: The SOURCE of Intellectual thoughts is in the PHYSICAL, TANGIBLE, EMOTIONAL WORLD; the SOURCE of Intuitive "thoughts" is in the INTANGIBLE REALITY of the SPIRITUAL WORLD. There is a world of difference here!
They are LITERALLY WORLDS APART! But one of them is ALWAYS RIGHT!
Of course, verbal thinking always FIRST draw our attention, because it is the most exciting, emotional, noisy, active kind of thinking. Makes us feel like we are doing something, like we are in control! Verbal thinking is what we've come to rely on for decision-making - as if our Intellect has all the right answers!
Therefore, it is a little harder to sense our passive and placid Intuition underneath all that activity and commotion - precisely BECAUSE it is so quiet and passive. But don't be fooled by our Intuition's passivity - there lies our real strength as human beings and as artists. THERE is where our creative spirit resides, it is THERE we find our personal vision in Art. THERE is where our Artist's free spirit lives and where we find true fulfillment. That is WHERE WE FIND OURSELVES.

CORRECT THINKING for ARTISTS
Isn't it an especially wonderful thought when you finally realize that one of our Selves (the quiet, non-verbal one) knows what we need to know for truth and guidance in creating Art? Isn't that great? All we have to do is LOOK BEYOND our argumentative, word-filled control-freak Intellectual thoughts and GIVE ATTENTION to our quiet Self.
OVERLOOK the racket - do not get stuck in the vicious circle of noise and commotion - DO NOT GIVE ATTENTION TO THE VERBAL NOISE AND COMMOTION! BECAUSE - and THIS IS VERY IMPORTRANT:
WHATEVER (or whoever) HOLDS YOUR ATTENTION CONTROLS YOU! It (or he or she) controls what you say and do - what you don't say or don't do, how you respond to any given situation.
Once we've become aware/conscious of our inspiration or Intuitive knowledge, our tyrannical Left Brain/Intellect can then be put in its proper place, i.e. the Left Brain/Intellect should play SECOND FIDDLE to our Right Brain/Intuition!
Then, our Intellect can actually be used the way it was designed to be used: Deal only with material things in the material world. It can then be truly useful and properly utilize its impressive storehouse of acquired knowledge and skills to materialize our Intuitive inspiration on canvas.
OUR INTELLECT (Left Brain) is now FUNCTIONING as NOTHING MORE than a TOOL for our free CREATIVE SPIRIT (Right Brain) - NOT IN OPPOSITION to our INTUITION - but IN CONCERT with it! BOTH SIDES of the BRAIN are now WORKING in HARMONY!
It is at this point we find that True Art is being created! And without effort, too! It couldn't be easier! We actually have re-connected with our free creative spirit. There is nothing more wonderful, more exciting than to experience this! It is an unforgettable experience!
I repeat: THE KEY TO CREATING TRUE ART IS BEING CONSCIOUSLY AWARE OF THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN RIGHT BRAIN AND LEFT BRAIN THINKING - AS IT HAPPENS.
Like all worthwhile things, it may not come easily at first- re-awakening your childhood relationship with your Self. After all, we have a lifetime of conditioning and programming to unravel. But press on - do not let up or become discouraged (this is another verbal-emotional message from our dictatorial Left Brain!).
Once you've had some experience with how this works for YOU, and the CREATIVE LIBERATION AND JOY it brings to your life, there will be no holding you back!
I PROMISE: INTUITIVE THINKING WILL BRING ABOUT A GREAT RENEWAL IN YOUR LIFE AND ART.
What happens next, is up to YOU.

I must now bring this introduction to Intuitive Thinking to a close. If you are still with me, I commend you for that! I know that this is a difficult and disturbing subject to think about, especially at first, because you are entering territory that is still more or less unknown to you. But, take courage and more power to you!
I just want to say that it is best to let all this simmer in the back of your mind. It will digest things for you without you having to dwell on it too much. It should not become an exercise in verbal Intellectual thinking! Insights WILL come to you, if you really WANT to know what your inner teacher (Intuition) has to show you.
Give your attention to the fleeting images, insights, and new or greater understanding that comes to you, and think about them. They will come to you LIKE thoughts (but wordless thoughts), whisper quiet, walking soft in stocking feet. They do not announce their presence with great fanfare! Then, more and more insights will come to you. The main thing is to think about them... focus your attention within to sense them... listen for them with an open mind... identify them, then act upon them in the full knowledge of the Rightness of your action.
